Location and Setting

San Rafael sits in central Marin County along the Highway 101 corridor, approximately 18 miles north of San Francisco.

The city stretches from the waterfront areas along San Pablo Bay up into hillside neighborhoods overlooking the valleys and ridges surrounding the city. Nearby natural areas include:

  • China Camp State Park, with scenic waterfront trails and historic fishing village sites
  • Marin Municipal Water District lands, offering miles of hiking and biking trails

San Rafael’s central location makes it a convenient hub for travel throughout Marin County. Residents have easy access to neighboring towns such as Larkspur, San Anselmo, and Novato, as well as ferry service to San Francisco from nearby Larkspur Landing.

A Brief History

The history of San Rafael dates back thousands of years to the Coast Miwok people, who lived in villages throughout the region.

In 1817, Mission San Rafael Arcángel was established in what is now downtown San Rafael. The mission was originally created as a hospital site for Native Americans who had become ill at Mission Dolores in San Francisco. Because of its milder climate, the site soon developed into a full mission.

The mission was named after Saint Raphael, the Archangel of Healing, reflecting its original purpose.

After the secularization of California’s missions in the 1830s, the mission complex gradually declined. The present-day mission church was rebuilt in 1949 near the original site and remains an important historical landmark.

During the 20th century, San Rafael grew into Marin County’s primary commercial and governmental center. One of its most iconic buildings is the Marin County Civic Center, designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright and completed in the 1960s.

San Rafael also developed connections to the film industry when George Lucas established operations in Marin County. Parts of films such as American Graffiti and THX 1138 were filmed in San Rafael, and Lucasfilm’s visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic was founded nearby.

Today the city blends historic landmarks, cultural institutions, and thriving local businesses.

The city recognizes more than 30 distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character, ranging from quiet residential communities to areas close to downtown amenities.
