What 32 Years in Real Estate Has Taught Me

When I first became a Realtor more than 32 years ago, I thought success was about knowing the market, understanding contracts, and negotiating a good deal.

Those things are certainly important.

But after helping hundreds of buyers and sellers through one of the biggest financial and emotional decisions of their lives, I've learned that real estate is really about people.

It's about listening carefully.

It's about asking better questions.

It's about helping people make decisions they'll still feel good about years from now.

Over the years I've watched markets soar, crash, recover, and change again. Interest rates have climbed, fallen, and climbed again. Technology has transformed the industry. Buyers now have more information than ever before.

And yet, one thing hasn't changed.

People still want someone they trust sitting beside them when the stakes are high.

Houses Are Emotional

Buying a home isn't simply a financial transaction.

It's where birthdays will be celebrated.
Where children will grow up.
Where holidays will be spent.
Where people recover from difficult times and celebrate wonderful ones.

That's why I never reduce real estate to numbers alone.

The numbers matter enormously—but so does understanding what kind of life someone wants to build.

The Right Neighborhood Often Matters More Than the Right House

This surprises many buyers.

They spend months searching for the perfect kitchen, the perfect floor plan, or the perfect view.
Eventually we begin talking about something much more important.

Where will you walk your dog?
Can your children ride their bikes safely?
Will you love your commute?
Will you still enjoy living here ten years from now?

Countertops can be replaced.
Neighborhoods can't.

Every Market Teaches Humility

I've experienced booming markets where homes sold within days.
I've worked through recessions when buyers disappeared.
I've watched interest rates reshape the market overnight.

The lesson?
Nobody consistently predicts the market perfectly.

That's why I focus less on trying to forecast tomorrow and more on helping clients make smart decisions based on today's facts.

Relationships Matter

One thing I've learned is that real estate remains a relationship business.

After three decades, I've built lasting relationships with agents throughout Marin County, trusted lenders, inspectors, contractors, and countless past clients.

Those relationships often create opportunities that don't show up on a website.

More importantly, they help transactions move more smoothly because people know they'll be treated fairly and professionally.

Honesty Always Wins

Sometimes the hardest conversations are the most important ones.

I've advised buyers not to purchase homes they loved.
I've encouraged sellers to price lower than they wanted.
I've recommended waiting instead of rushing.

Those conversations aren't always easy.

But my responsibility has never been to tell clients what they want to hear.
It's to tell them what I genuinely believe is in their best interest.

Looking back, that's probably the lesson I'm proudest of.

Success Isn't Measured at Closing

Closing escrow is exciting.

But I don't judge success by the day someone gets their keys.
I judge it years later.

When clients call to say they still love their home.
When they ask me to help their children buy their first home.
When they recommend me to friends because they trusted my advice.

That's what 32 years in real estate has taught me.

This business isn't really about houses.
It's about helping people make one of the most important decisions of their lives with confidence.
