Cascade Canyon
Just south and west of downtown Mill Valley is the quiet neighborhood of Cascade Canyon. Wooded hillsides and meandering streams provide Cascade Canyon properties a sense of privacy and serenity that exemplifies the Mill Valley lifestyle; yet all the while shops, services, and the amenities of town are just minutes away.
Tucked up against the base of Mount Tamalpais, Cascade Canyon is literally just steps away from hiking and biking trails, including the rather infamous steps that mark the beginning of the climb for the annual Dipsea Race and access to spectacular hiking trails on Mount Tam and through the Muir Woods.
In terms of Mill Valley schools, award winning Old Mill Elementary School is the neighborhood school for Cascade Canyon, and serves most children living in the area. Junior high students living in the community attend Mill Valley Middle School then move on to Tamalpais High School to complete their secondary education.
Cascade Falls
Across Cascade Drive, you will find a tiny parking lot and a sign displaying "Cascade Falls." Walk a short distance following the creek on a well maintained trail lined with forget-me-nots, ferns, redwood sorrel and trillium. The trail soon splits - the left fork heads to the top of the falls, the right to your best view of the falls themselves. Turn right, cross a wooden bridge over the creek and you come to a bench. Continue to a second bench for the best view of the falls.
When you are through enjoying the falls, simply return to Cascade Drive and downtown or extend your hike a little by continuing on the path beyond the falls. This trail is rougher but not difficult, and offers more views of the creek and falls. Cross to the other side of the creek over a footbridge and return on the trail on the opposite side of the falls back down to Cascade Drive.
Three Wells
Walk beside the creek bed on a rough trail around a bend to the spot known as Three Wells. Again, depending upon rainfall, Three Wells can be a tumbling, multilevel waterfall, three pools (wells), or three puddles. In hot weather, this area is a popular swimming hole for locals. Continue along the trail and until you return to Cascade Drive.
