A Brief History
The land that became Corte Madera was originally part of Rancho Corte Madera del Presidio, granted in 1834 to John Reed by Mexican Governor José Figueroa.
Reed recognized the area’s abundant redwood forests and began logging operations, shipping lumber down Corte Madera Creek to San Francisco. Some of that wood helped build early structures at the Presidio.
In the late 1800s, the North Pacific Coast Railroad brought new development to the area, allowing lumber and passengers to travel between Marin and San Francisco via ferry connections in Sausalito.

Small parcels were created on Christmas Tree Hill, originally intended as tent sites for weekend visitors.
