March 2023 Market Insight

It appears that the fixes put in place for the banking crisis have, so far, headed off any significant negative impacts on buyer psychology and Bay Area markets - but the situation continues to develop rapidly. Interest rates have been volatile as investors stampeded this way and that since the end of last week. On Tuesday, the February inflation reading came in lower than January's, but not as low as hoped. Between the inflation reading and the banking crisis, predictions about what the Fed will do at their meeting next week and how markets will subsequently react vary wildly.
 
These 2 interest rate charts look at the most recent daily and weekly average readings. Note that different sources of average mortgage rate data use different methodologies to calculate rates, though the trends are typically very similar. With volatility, different banks can often offer significantly different rates:
